<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Burnout can happen to anyone who feels overworked and undervalued such as a person in a high-stress level job, first responders, a stay at home mom or support caregiver for an aging parent who never gets a break. The longer you let it go on, the harder it is to recover from it. Burnout affects you physically, mentally and emotionally. It seems gradual at first but then it snowballs until you have no control over it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You may be experiencing burnout if you have the following symptoms:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">feeling tired and unmotivated all of the time

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">having frequent illnesses such as colds and digestive issues;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">headaches, muscle pain, or another type of inflammation;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">changes in appetite, weight gain or loss and trouble sleeping

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">feeling overwhelmed, alone and helpless;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">having a cynical view and negative outlook;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">having anxiety attacks;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">trouble focussing and completing tasks

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I was suffering from burnout, I would frequently get knots in my stomach during the day. I was also anxious all of the time and would wake up in the middle of the night with heart palpitations and a racing mind. During the last few months of my burnout, I developed tennis elbow, which is painful inflammation of the tendons in the elbow and forearm.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if=""></b:>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you are suffering from burnout you should remove yourself from whatever situation is causing the stress. If it is work-related, use your vacation days for a break or consider going on stress leave. If you are a caregiver, perhaps turn to a family member or friend for help in giving you a break. It also helps to talk to someone about how you are feeling.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How to Change
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In order to recover from burnout, you need to make some changes to your life and reevaluate your priorities.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">set boundaries, learn to say "no" and do not overextend yourself;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">take time to disconnect from technology each day and do not check emails constantly;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">do something not related to your cause of stress such as taking up a hobby, reading, spending time with pets, spending time in nature;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">set aside relaxation time each day for yourself;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ensure that you are getting enough sleep;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">eat properly and limit refined sugars, carbs and alcohol as they contribute to anxiety and inflammation;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">get some exercise;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">if you work at a desk job, ensure that you get away from your desk at lunch hour and try not to eat lunch at your desk;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">learn to let some things go - you can't do everything and be everything;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">if work is causing your burnout, reevaluate your job and consider changing jobs

<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">For a few years now, I switched from a dish rack to a drying dish mat. I was tired of the dish rack because it was bulky to store and got dirty and was difficult to clean, especially in the silverware area. It also looks ugly sitting on the counter.</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">I love a dish drying mat because it can be stored with the dish towels and I can wash it in hot water and some bleach with my dish towels #easytoclean. I usually use my mat for three to four days and then I change it up. I own about 4 mats made from microfiber. You can buy them for anywhere from $8 to $15.</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">A dish rack does not soak up the water so it takes longer for the dishes to dry. With the mat, water is soaked up right away as it drips onto the mat. <b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">I have found a cool App for grocery shopping. It is called Checkout 51. It is a free cash back App that pays you money when you buy certain products. Simply scroll through the products on the list and check off what you normally buy and what you plan to buy on your next shopping trip. The amount of money you get back is shown under the product. Read the offer closely because sometimes the offer is available only at certain stores.</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">How do I redeem offers?</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
Just tap the redeem button at the bottom of your App and click the items that are on your receipt. You will then be prompted to take a photo of your receipt. Ensure that your photo includes the date and time of the receipt. It will take 24 to 48 hours for Checkout 51 to review your invoice and credit your account. You can cash out once your account reaches a minimum of $20 and a cheque will be mailed to you.

I love this App because it's easy to use and I love getting money back for groceries! If you would like to sign up, click on the link below or copy and paste the link into your browser. You will receive a $2.00 credit on your account once you redeem an offer plus $1.00 for three more offers you redeem for a total of $5.00.
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">I have been trying intermittent fasting for almost a month and it has really worked for weight loss. To get the best results, experts advise to fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. I haven't been able to fast for 16 hours yet but that is my goal. I stop eating at night around 8:00 p.m. and then fast until 10:00 a.m. I am hoping to push that to 12:00 p.m. in the near future.<b:if></b:if></b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">At first, it was difficult to not eat anything first thing in the morning. I thought that by not eating I wouldn't be able to concentrate at work and wouldn't have the energy to push through until lunchtime. That is not the case. I have black coffee when I first wake up and then when I get to work I have a tea. Around 10:00 a.m., I will have a small snack of cucumber, blueberries or apple. While fasting, you are allowed to have water, coffee and tea provided that you do no put anything in it like cream or sugar.</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">Intermittent fasting has been known to balance blood sugar levels and hormones. It is not a diet but a pattern of eating. It works because when you are in a fast from 12 to 16 hours, insulin levels out and your body burns fat. </b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">You may think it would be hard to give up your breakfast but If you love breakfast food then you can just eat your breakfast at lunchtime. I find it easier skipping breakfast because it is one less thing I have to worry about before heading out the door in the morning. I will admit that it is a bit more difficult on the weekend to fast in the morning.</b:>
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:>
Even though I was walking and going to the gym prior to fasting, I wasn't losing weight. I am enjoying this lifestyle change and do not feel deprived.
Here is how I do it:

I fill the sink with hot water and bleach and allow it to soak for about 1/2 hour. Meanwhile, I take the stove knobs off and throw them into the hot water to disinfect them as well. Stove knobs can get very dirty from food splatters. I then use the water in the sink and wipe down the stove, fridge, countertops, and microwave paying close attention to the handles on the appliances. I also wipe down the backsplash and window sill.

After that I drain the sink and put in some comet. Using an SOS pad, I scrub the sink and around the faucet. Comet can be hard to fully rinse off so be sure to rinse it off well. If you don't like using harsh chemicals, you can use vinegar and baking soda instead. For the final step, I dry the sink with a paper towel and then spray it and the faucet with Windex, which brings out the shine.

It always feels good to do this and to see an empty, shiny sink! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3269619551036008640.post-51287016488253687082018-04-26T19:46:00.001-04:002018-04-26T19:46:34.074-04:00How to Cook Asparagus Perfectly

One of my pet peeves is overcooked, mushy asparagus and I admit when I first made asparagus, it turned out this way. After making a couple more attempts at cooking asparagus, I finally mastered it.

Asparagus should be tender yet crisp when it is cooked. It can be grilled, roasted, pan fried, steamed or boiled. I prefer boiling it. To prepare the asparagus for cooking, snap the ends off first. I do not cut the ends with a knife but I snap the end off with my hands. Asparagus tends to have a certain spot on it that snaps off easily. Once all of the ends have been snapped off each spear, drop them into a pot of boiling water and cook for about 3 minutes, a little longer if the spears are thick. I always set a timer to keep track of the boiling time. You can stick a fork into one of the spears to see if it is tender.
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">
</b:><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
My husband has had a cast iron frying pan for years, even before we met, and it has been sitting in the back of our kitchen cabinet for 22 years without being used much. I was intimidated by the cast iron because it requires more maintenance than a non-stick pan. A couple of weeks ago I pulled out the cast iron pan because I was becoming concerned about cooking on a non-stick pan and the potential chemicals that could be getting into our food.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Because the pan hadn't been used in years, I rubbed some olive oil onto the whole interior of the pan. I then fried some bacon in it and it cooked very evenly. A few days later, and after a few Google searches, I became adventurous and cooked a pork roast in the pan. Here is the beauty of cast iron: you can sear your roast on the stove top then immediately transfer the cast iron into the oven! This would also work for roasting vegetables. The pork roast came out very moist.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have figured out how to clean the cast iron and season it after each use. I wash it in soapy water and rub it with a scouring pad. I then rinse it and dry it with paper towel. Once it is dry, I buff the pan with olive oil (or canola oil) to season it. Seasoning means to make it non-stick. After the oil is applied it can be placed in the oven for about 30 min at 400 degrees. You do not have to put it in the oven every time you use it but it should be buffed with oil each time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Please keep in mind that when cooking with cast iron, you will need to use an oven mitt when touching the handle because it will get hot as well.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Last week, the staff in my department went out for our annual Christmas lunch at an Italian restaurant in the downtown Toronto. We ordered bacon wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese. I was a bit skeptical at first, bacon with dates? But then again, anything wrapped in bacon is great! They were delicious and disappeared immediately. The sweetness of the date blends perfectly with the saltiness of the bacon. I am going to make these over the holidays. I am sure my kids will devour them! This is the recipe:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Medjool dates

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">thin sliced bacon

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">goat cheese

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">toothpicks

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Preheat oven to 350 degrees
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Slice dates lengthwise down the middle and remove the pit. Spoon a small amount of goat cheese in the opening. Cut a slice of bacon in half and wrap around the date. Then secure it with a toothpick. Repeat these steps for as many dates as you wish to serve. Place the dates on a baking sheet with raised edges (you don't want the grease to drip on your oven). For ease of cleaning, you can line the baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake for about 10 minutes, remove from oven and turn the dates so the bacon crisps evenly. Bake for another 5 to 8 minutes and check for crispness. If they are all evenly crisp, remove from oven and place on a paper towel for 5 minutes, then serve and watch them disappear!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Delicious!!!
<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">I am in need of new towels and will soon be replacing my old ones with nice quality towels. Since good quality towels are expensive and an investment, I want to keep them in good condition for as many years as possible. This led me to do some research on how to properly care for towels and I discovered the following tips:</b:>

Wash white towels in very hot water and colored towels in cold water with about 1/2 the amount of laundry detergent that you would normally use. Too much detergent can make your towels stiff;

If you like to bleach your towels, use only non-chlorine bleach as chlorine will damage the fibres;

Place 1/2 cup of vinegar in the wash to remove soap buildup and keep your towels fluffy;

Avoid using dryer sheets because they coat towels with a waxy residue that affects how towels absorb water. You can use a dryer ball instead;

Ensure that you dry the towels immediately after being washed so that they don't develop a mildew odor.

I can't wait to buy my new towels and try out these tips.

I think I will get white ones as they feel spa like and can easily be bleached, if necessary.

<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if=""><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">I recently heard the Polish proverb, Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys and had a revelation about how people tend to be worried about other people's problems and try to fix them or worry about them. I thought about how I worry about what's going on mainly around my workplace. I don't get involved with the gossip but I do get upset that I have such a heavy workload and a lot of my co-workers do not have a heavy workload and they come in late, take long lunch hours and leave early and never offer to pitch in to help the "workhorses" in the department. This proverb has made me take a step back and realize that other people's workload is not in my control. I cannot force these people to work their specified hours or make them help others. I do not have to pay these co-workers - it is the company I work for who pays them so its their problem if these people are slacking off. It is the company who is losing money and production - not me. </b:>

I was less moody;

My skin cleared up;

I slept better;

I no longer "crashed" in the afternoon;

My craving for sweet things disappeared after a few weeks

I cut out refined sugar by not putting it into my coffee. I stopped eating desserts, baked items and chocolate. When I see something sweet now I don't even think about eating it because for one, it doesn't appeal to me anymore and two, I think about how bad I would feel after eating it. It's almost like having a hangover.

I have more energy now than I did in my teens and up until my late 30's. I am now very conscious about the amount of sugar in foods and I always read the nutrition label to check for the amount in products. Children should have no more than 3 tsp (12 g) of sugar a day, men no more than 9 tsp (36 g) and women no more than 6 (24 g). A can of pop can have 40 g to 60 g of sugar! Sugar can also be in places you wouldn't think of such as condiments and salad dressings.

If you are craving something sweet you are better to have a piece of fruit. You can also sweeten coffee and tea with real maple syrup or honey. I know it sounds hard to give up eating sweets but after a couple of weeks your body will be used to not having the sugar rush and you will feel amazing!

<b: cond="data:blog.pageType=="item"" if="">This year I felt adventurous and decided to change up the way I make my gravy. Normally, I throw away the giblets and neck but this time I threw it into the bottom of the roasting pan along with some onions and celery. I got this tip from Jamie Oliver's website. The giblets and neck added a lot of flavor to the gravy and I will definitely add them to the pan the next time. Another tip I have for making gravy, which is my own tip, is to make a roux of butter and flour (1 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp flour) before adding the turkey broth to the pot. This will make the gravy a nice golden colour and will give it a smooth texture without lumps. </b:>
I started going to the gym for the first time in my life about 4 months ago. When I started working out I thought it would be a big challenge to motivate myself to go. As it turned out, that wasn't the case because I love going to the gym and really notice a difference when I miss a day out of my schedule. It is the one place where I can get away from my phone, unplug and relieve daily stress. At first I was going once a week but lately I have been going at least two times. I do cardio on the ascent machine (ellyptical). For the first few months, I was using the fat burn and manual settings. I recently switched the setting to interval training and I have found that has made a big difference. I am finally starting to see results and I tend not to gain as much water weight afterwards. With interval training, low intensity is rotated with spurts of high intensity. I really enjoy this type of workout because there is variety and the workout seems to go quicker. I also get my heart rate up higher with this type of workout. My workout usually lasts between 40 and 50 minutes and I burn at least 400 calories. My objective is for my body to keep burning calories after my workout and to increase my metabolism. I found that my metabolism slows down each year after I reached 40. I will post about this again in a couple of months to see if I continue to see results!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3269619551036008640.post-40627212647835889572013-02-16T06:45:00.000-05:002013-02-16T06:45:48.987-05:00Great Home Security TipI was listening to a local radio station the other morning and there was a policewoman talking about home security and how to prevent break-ins while you are away. She gave one particular tip that I had never thought of or even heard of before. Her advice was to put your house number on the back of your house as well so that neighbours along the back of your property can immediately report a break in because they can see your house number. If you take a look at the neighbours behind your house, chances are you know the street name that they are on but you don't know the number. Think of how this would assist the police in an emergency. It would save lots of time because they wouldn't have to search for the house.

This is the time of year where people like to get away over the winter and I thought this was an excellent tip to share.
I stopped short when I saw a woman checking out of that lane with a full cart of groceries. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. To top that off, the grocery store that I was at will match a sale price of a different grocery store if you bring in their flyer. Well, this woman had a handful of flyers and the checkout clerk had to check almost every item against the flyers so that the woman could get the sale price. This was taking forever. Finally, as the checkout line grew bigger, the manager opened up a regular checkout line to service the annoyed express customers.

I think it is very inconsiderate to even think about going through the express lane with a full cart of groceries. I am also surprised that the checkout clerk didn't tell the woman to go to a different lane. In any event, the woman was still going through her flyers and occupying the lane when I left. Some things just really make you shake your head...
I used one of these for my younger son in 2005 and I absolutely loved it! The chair allowed him to be in a sitting position before he was strong enough to sit unassisted. It gave him another perspective of play. I do remember however that he was only able to use it for a few months because he became too strong for it and was able to move around.

The reason for the recall is that some babies have wiggled out of the seats and have fallen and suffered skull fractures. I think that the chair is safe if the child is supervised and placed on the floor only. Apparently some people have placed the chair on high surfaces such as counters and tables. People should never underestimate the strength of their baby and its ability to move around.

The manufacturer of Bumbo is sending out a repair kit to those who fill out a form on their website. The repair kit includes new warning stickers and a restraint belt with installation instructions. Hopefully people will be able to install the belts properly. If you need to order your repair kit please click here.

All seats manufactured after today will have the restraint belts installed. To read CBC's report of the recall, please click here.
I am not a huge movie buff but if I come across a great one I will watch it more than once. Last night I watched Erin Brokovich, starring Julia Roberts, which is one of my favorite movies. There is a scene at the beginning of the movie where Julia Roberts (playing Erin) has taken her kids out to eat. I had no idea until last night that the waitress who served her in that scene is the real Erin Brokovich. I have seen the movie about 5 times and never noticed that before. I thought it was a neat twist that she would have a cameo in the film. I wonder how many people realized that it was actually her?
My son likes to make these.

Ingredients:

1 cup flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 cup milk
3 tbsp melted butter

How to Prepare:

1. Mix together flour, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl.
2. Beat together eggs, milk and melted butter in a small bowl.
3. Add liquid mixture to dry ingredients and stir. You can add fruit at this point.
4. Over medium heat, melt some butter in a frying pan and pour in batter. You can determine whatever size pancake you like.
5. When the pancake begins to bubble and the edges turn brown, flip and cook the other side.

Whoever found her wallet figured out her bank code which the bank assumed was the lady's birthdate which the thief found on her health card. $8,800 was taken from her account without her knowing. The lady stated that she had forgotten about the bank card and didn't realize what had happened until the bank contacted her to advise that some cheques had bounced. The lady then explained that she had lost her wallet 6 weeks prior and expected that the bank would reimburse her for the stolen money. However, the bank (Scotiabank) advised that they would not reimburse her because her pin was too easy and that she waited 6 weeks to report her card lost/stolen.

Although I feel very sorry for the lady for losing so much money, I do have to side with the bank that she waited too long to report it lost/stolen. It would be interesting however to see what a judge would say if the lady takes it to court.

This is definitely a lesson that if you lose a bank card, credit card, or any type of identification that it should be reported lost/stolen immediately since the banks will only reimburse for funds stolen after a lost/stolen report is filed. It is also a good idea to keep a list of all of your card numbers and phone numbers of the bank or credit card company on the card so that you can quickly call to report them lost or stolen.
This martial art is a form of self defense and is great for improving flexibility, concentration, and to build confidence if confronted by a bully. It also teaches kids to be disciplined, hardworking and to show respect. My son just recently received his yellow belt, which is one up from the beginner's white belt. The goal is to practice the defense moves until they become second nature. This is also a great skill for adults to learn and there are many variations to martial arts such as tai-kwon-do, kickboxing, and karate. It is also quite affordable. The only thing you need to purchase to get started is a gi which is the white uniform and belt. I pay a monthly fee and he is able to go 3 to 4 times a week if he wishes.

However, a friend of mine recently shared a tip with me on how to easily clean vinyl blinds.

First you find a pair of white cotton gloves. In a small bucket, mix 1 part vinegar to 1 part hot water. Then put the gloves on and dip your fingertips into the vinegar solution and run your fingertips over each slat in the blind. I found that the vinegar solution picked up the dirt easily and made the blinds shiny. This method sped up the cleaning process and I would recommend to anyone to give it a try.

<data: post.body/><b: if cond='data:blog.pageType=="item"'><b:if>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
